Chiron has been referred to as asteroid, dwarf planet, minor planet, comet, and also considered in the class of centaurs* orbiting between Saturn and Uranus in the asteroid belt.

Chiron was discovered November 1, 1977 by Charles Kowal and was the first-identified member of a new class of objects now known as centaurs.

Centaurs were half human, half horse in Greek mythology. Chiron was a Greek Centaur who was also half mortal and half immortal god. Interestingly, as small solar system bodies Centaurs also have characteristics of both asteroids (minor planet like objects with a specific orbit) and comets (small icy solar system body affected by the Sun and Solar Wind – often producing tails as result). These Centaurs orbit between the Asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt.

Astronomers estimate there about 44,000 centaurs in our Solar System with diameters larger than 1 kilometer or just over a half of a mile more accurately about .62 miles.

Chiron was initially called an asteroid (minor planet) and then was later found to also exhibit behavior typical of a comet. Today it seems perfect that Chiron is classified as both a minor planet and a comet (half man/half horse and also half mortal and half immortal).

American Astronomer Michael Brown lists Chiron as a possible dwarf planet with a measured diameter of 206 km (128 miles) near the lower limit for an icy dwarf planet (around 200 km, or 124 miles).

Chiron’s Orbit is about 50 years (returning often within a few weeks) to a starting point. Due to its elliptical orbit Chiron travels through Aries about 9 years (2018 to 2027) and Taurus about 8 years (2026 to 2034). Chiron travels through Libra and Scorpio for the shortest amount of time around 2.5 years (or at least that is what it was the last time around). See table below.

The next time Chiron enters Aries is May 3, 2068.

Find the Sign Chiron was in when you were born by finding the closest date just before your birthday near the year you were born. For example, if you were born in 1956, 1957, 1958, or 1959 up to March 26, 1960 Chiron was in Aquarius – highlighted in blue. After that Chiron dipped back into Aquarius from August 18/19, 1960 (depending on your time zone) until Jan 21, 1961.
