Giving and Receiving…Themes of Reciprocity

You’ve got the music in you
Don’t let go
You’ve got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don’t give up
You’ve got a reason to live
Can’t forget
We only get what we give

“You Get What You Give” New Radicals

The month of September always features an Equinox, a time of balance between day and night. My sense is a word that speaks to the concept of balance is reciprocity or an equal energy exchange that maintains the balance of giving and receiving. Reciprocity is a concept that many believe operates in a similar way to the law of cause and affect meaning what we give out is what we get back as stated in the last line of the above song.

This point of view is also reflected in statements like what goes around, comes around, or as you sew, so shall you reap. In our materially driven current reality, there is seemingly a lot in this world that does NOT truly reflect the principle of reciprocity. For example, there are workers who give the best they have to their work and yet remained underpaid and under appreciated due to greedy business practices that are only interested in extracting the most amount of work for the least amount of pay to further their profits. At the hint of an economic downturn many who are dedicated, caring, responsible workers are laid off from their jobs to protect the bottom line of the corporation or business.

In recent times, it seems that these takers are the ones who are rewarded with more than their fair share of material wealth and power. This represents a HUGE imbalance that can be tracked back through history, but ultimately this hasn’t always been the case in every culture or tribal society. Many native cultures had ways of balancing their wealth among tribal members. The ancient Jewish people had a Jubilee celebration every 50 years as described in Leviticus. This was a time when debts were forgiven, prisoners freed and wealth and property redistributed. Sadly this practice no longer occurs. How amazing would it be for the entire world to adopt something like this?

“This fiftieth year is sacred—it is a time of freedom and of celebration when everyone will receive back their original property, and slaves will return home to their families. ” ~Leviticus 25:10

In Jamie Samms book “The Sacred Path Cards” there is a section describing the “The Field of Plenty” easily accessed through gratitude and appreciation. In addition to expressing daily gratitude for what they already had, these tribal people also took time to express advanced gratitude as if what they were grateful for was already theirs. Jamie Samms describes it this way:

The Field of Plenty is an Iroquois Teaching that has to do with the understanding of Creation. When Great Mystery created our world everything that would ever exist was created as ideas in the Thought or Spirit World. This nonphysical plane of awareness is eternal and can be drawn upon anytime there is a need. The thought-forms that provide all that is ever needed on the Good Red Road of physical life exist in eternal readiness inside the Field of Plenty. To call these ideas into manifestation, one need only come to Great Mystery with a grateful heart which will bring the needed ideas into physical reality…

… The Native understanding is that there is always enough for everyone when abundance is shared and when gratitude is given back to the Original Source…

…Since the Vibral Alignment or Harmonic Convergence, in August of 1987, our Elders have seen the Field of Plenty actually touch the Earth Mother and come to rest like a blanket over her body. In so doing, the Field of Plenty is now able to provide instant manifestation for all Earth’s Children who call for their needs with gratitude prior to receiving those blessings…

…Every need in our world can be met when we act upon any good idea that comes into our minds. Every talent and every role in physical life plays a part that assists the whole in manifesting abundant life…

…The Field of Plenty always has a way putting the needed item into the hands of the person who needs it. The keys to manifesting what is needed are gratitude and trust, balanced with action. There is no need for scarcity in the Fifth World. Abundance for all the Children of Earth is manifesting Thought always precedes form. If ideas of sharing and equality precede that reality in the hearts of Two-leggeds, the manifestation of physical needs being met will follow.

This is Great Mystery’s promise in creating the Field of Plenty. ~ Jamie Samms

During this Equinox Time, in addition to expressing heart-felt gratitude for all the many gifts of life you already have, this is a great time to notice if you are living a balanced life of giving and receiving.
Are you treating yourself and others with respect and appreciation?
Do you value the work others do for you and pay them fairly for their services?
Are you being treated with respect and appreciation and are you being compensated fairly for the work or services you provide?
Are you choosing to live a life of reciprocity, balancing what you receive with what you give?

The September 7 Total Lunar Eclipse features Loving Compassion and Acceptance.
It is possible to further revolutionize our experience of true radical compassion. Jelaila Starr wrote an article back in 2005 saying compassion is…deep awareness of the suffering of another (including our own suffering and compassion for self) without the need to relieve it, feeling total appreciation for its value; a state of non-judgment…a state of total acceptance. (See video on this remarkable Full Moon below)

This type of compassion requires a radical willingness to be with what IS while releasing the need to rescue, fix, change, or control the outcome. So how are we accepting the “unacceptable”, forgiving the “unforgivable”, and loving the “unlovable”?

It helps to be willing to release our emotional and mental attachments to how we believe events in life “should or should not” be or how we as humans “should or should not be”.

Accepting what IS for Now delineates the key component of Radical Compassion. When we feel a need to rescue or fix a person or situation we are not coming from true compassion but rather an addictive need to have things be different than what they are.

Accepting things as they are doesn’t mean we give up our desire for change or the willingness to take action to create change. This is really about the difference between an addictive need and a healthy preference. We can still prefer what we prefer while accepting what IS beyond our control.

Acceptance helps us to give up the need for it to be different than what it IS and that often facilitates the change all by it self, especially when we are not attached to what the change looks like.

Our desires are not good or bad, in fact desire is what fuels our co-creative process with the Universe. It is the attachment to the results that causes problems.

Ken Keyes in his book Three Prescriptions for Happiness addresses this in his first prescription.
Ask for what you want, but don’t demand it. It is important to ask without attachment to the outcome. Asking helps to clarify what we do want for ourselves. Also we can’t expect others to read our minds meaning we need to ask for what we want with out attachment to the results.

This requires practice at communicating in ways that are clear, requesting what we want but not demanding it look, or be, any certain way. It helps to remain open to the magic and mystery that will often fulfill our request in more fun and miraculous ways than we had ever imagined when we are open to the flow of life.

Here’s to another transformative month as we co-create a new world experience both personally and collectively.
